Meet the Roll-Top Pack
In the process of making any new Winter Session product, we always try to strike a balance between function, versatility, and style -- and the Roll-Top Pack is no different. We designed our Roll-Top to be a multifunctional and stylish everyday pack that you'll reach for whether you’re commuting, planning some serious travel, or just kicking around. Starting with our favorite natural materials and some signature design details, we outfitted the pack with an easily adjustable volume, flexible storage options, and comfortable carry straps, all while maintaining a handsome unisex appeal.
Over the years we've had many requests for a roll-top style pack. We took our time in making our own version, as we wanted to make sure that the result was commuter-friendly without being overly simplified and bulky on the one hand, or too tech/gimmick-heavy on the other. Staying true to our refined utilitarian aesthetic, we kept the design language simple, borrowing some key elements from our Day Pack and adding some new details to our vocabulary. Every detail of the Waxed Canvas Roll-Top Pack has been carefully thought through, prototyped, and field tested by our own team to ensure that it helps add versatility and functionality (not to mention good looks!) to your daily carry routine.
We wanted to give the Roll-Top a generous (yet flexible) volume, a weather resistant closure to the main compartment, and plenty of easy-access storage for small items. Allowing adjustments in carrying capacity, the sturdy waxed canvas 'roll-top' panel secures with a leather strap and buckle. For those days when you need to carry a few extra things, the entire top portion of the bag can be popped up -- and snapped closed -- to accommodate extra belongings. We find this function especially handy for grocery shopping, going to and from the gym/yoga classes, carrying extra layers while out on weekend adventures, or stashing your bike helmet when you get to where you're going.
Pocket-wise, we've provided plenty of spots to stash your small items and accessories. Inside, there's a laptop sleeve (which takes advantage of the padded back panel for extra cushion -- not to mention comfort while you're shouldering the pack) along with our signature flat accessory pocket. We've kept the rest of the small item storage on the outside of the pack for easy access: two front pleated pockets with snap tab closure are great for carrying small notebooks, sunglasses, and phone/wallet/keys, while open side pockets are perfect for stowing a compact water bottle or an emergency snack.
Bonus: for added convenience when biking, we've sized all of the outside pockets to fit a U-lock.
Like our Day Pack, we've padded the back panel of the Roll-Top with closed cell foam, which is sandwiched between two layers of waxed canvas and then quilted with our heavyweight nylon thread. This makes it comfortable to carry against your back -- even when loads get heavy. The leather carry handle makes for easy short-distance transport, while vegetable-tanned leather shoulder straps will conform to your body over the long haul, gradually becoming more soft and supple with minimal stretch.
Each Roll-Top Pack is made by us, from start to finish, in our workshop: rolls of waxed canvas are laid out and cut in small batches, bags are sewn and assembled on industrial sewing machines, and leather details are die cut and then hand beveled, waxed and finished before getting secured with solid brass hardware. The result is a streamlined yet sturdy companion for everyday carry: stylish enough to carry to work, flexible enough to accommodate unusual loads, adaptable enough to bring along on adventures, and dependable enough to encourage long-term commitment. We put a lot of thought and hard work into making our bags, and we hope that you will not only feel the love when you pick them up for the first time -- but also feel proud to carry them for years to come.
